9. How to take a simple profile picture outdoors using your camera phone

You’re outside and think this would be a cool background for a photo. It’s the perfect opportunity to update your social media profile picture.

In the video below, I show you what to consider to get a great looking photo with your camera phone and its native app.

Before you start, some things to keep in mind to keep it simple:

Weather. I do not recommend using this on a dark overcast or rainy days as the light will be very different.

Time. You ideally want to use my instructions when the sun is low in the sky. I suggest morning light (about 1-2 hours after sunrise) or evening light 1 hour before golden hour (so typically this would be around 2-3 hours before the sun sets). Please check the times for your location as this shifts throughout the seasons.

Ask someone to take the picture. I don’t recommend doing it yourself in selfie mode because you need more distance than your arm to avoid distorting the face. Tripod or propping it at your eye level (while using a timer) works too.

If you use another app (other than the native one) to control your camera phone then go ahead and use it. The native app on your smartphone will work equally as well. I apply the filters at the end of the video.
